Information for Parents A few ways that you as a parent can be helpful in this process - besides paying the lease!
  • This is a good time to renovate/update your furniture/appliances. College students love free or deeply discounted items with “character”!
  • Be a voice of reason when it comes to cost to live per month. This is often the first time students learn how to budget. Sitting down with your student now could help pay dividends in the future.
  • Help with a walk through of the property if possible. As a home owner in the past, you know what to look for to make sure the property is not going to give your student any surprises upon moving in.
  • Encourage your student to speak about issues with roommates as soon as they arise. Good friends can become terrible roommates if communication breaks down.
  • Visit your student to see his or her new place. Your student will be very happy to show of his or her new place. This also can be a proud moment for parents.
  • Consider sending gift cards from local grocery stores, malls, or restaurants for special occasions like the first day of the semester, birthdays, midterm and finals week. (I will be looking to add in a link here for local advertisers)..
